How I Became An Overnight Success

overnight-successI left AL five days ago to come to LA with the hope of finding gold, and I did! I am in shock as to how easy I was able to accomplish ALL of my personal, professional, and business goals. Allow me to recap some of the accomplishments. First, there was the house-hunting.  Within thirty minutes of meeting my real estate broker, she found me the perfect home. The house sat on ten acres of prime real estate and featured 6 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, a 12-seat theatre with a jumbo screen and interactive surround sound, an observatory, massive dining, living, and family rooms, a rooftop infinity pool situated on a gorgeous backdrop, a guesthouse, and believe it or not, a helipad. I also found the perfect academy for my two high-schoolers. This academy has churn out noble laureates, senators, a few presidents, and highly successful entrepreneurs.

On the professional side of things. I had one goal, and that was to find an additional source of income . And as luck would have it, I scored big on my first try. I was offered a full-time position at a prestigious university – given a corner office overlooking a beautiful man-made pond, two graduate assistants, and to top things off, I was paid a bonus – equivalent to two years of salary and perquisites-somewhere in the six-digit range.

Well, it gets better. Regarding my business, although things did not get off to a quick start, I was still able to secure the deal of a lifetime. I met with reps from reputable multinational manufacturers and after some high-stake bargaining and negotiation, I left the table with a deal so good that it bordered on criminal – I mean, they basically gave me the keys to their company. I now have a company that will handle all of the manufacturing and distribution for my luxury cosmetics line.

As I sit here on the balcony of my hotel suite reflecting on the events of the past few days, I feel extremely fortunate. The gods favor me and all my stars are perfectly aligned. I never imagined that I would be an overnight success. No really – it never dawned on me because I know there is no such thing as overnight success. Life simply does not work that way! The above accounts…well, they are fairy-tales – inventions created in my mind as to how I hope things would have turned out.

Here’s what really happened on this trip.

I landed in LA, went sight-seeing, took some pics, and a few hours later I checked into a cheap hotel ($78 a night) with clean rooms and horrible internet service. I did go house-hunting, but houses in the LA area are so damn expensive that I would need to sell an organ or two and add on my first borns (twins) as security just to fetch something decent. I found a school where my kids could attend, but in order for them to attend that particular public school, I would have to live in the neighborhood where the median home value is close to a million dollars. I applied for a job, landed an interview, but was not offered the position.

The next few days were spent meeting with manufacturers. The first meeting was epic (no kidding). I met with a lady named Michelle (an engineer) and Michelle is a bad-ass. I mean, she sat in her office with two large monitors on her desk – multitasking-going through this file and that file. After a few minutes discussing my product’s drawings, her curiosity got the best of her and she was privy to some of my product details that made her blush. Unfortunately her company could only manufacture parts of my product, which disqualified them from being awarded a contract. After many hours of painstaking research, I found another company that by all indicators will be able to mass produce “the future of cosmetics.”

So, here’s the bottom line – the crux of the matter – the main point of the story. This trip has taught me that in order to accomplish my goals I must be committed to the grind – no days off! Oh, and there is no such thing as overnight success. Success takes time and requires effort, persistence, patience, hard work, and a bit of luck! The most important takeaway from this trip can be wrapped up this way, and that is: Good things come to those who wait, and greater things come to those who go after it!
