A few days ago, I was having a conversation with a group of students and stated that an essential key to becoming wealthy and successful is one’s proximity to greatness—great ideas, great people and great information.
I’ve had some time to consider that idea, and although I still believe that proximity to greatness is a prerequisite step in wealth accumulation and successful outcomes, I also believe that being close to great ideas, great people and great information will translate into greatness to the degree that a person is willing to WORK!
Over the last year and a half, my circle of influence has undergone a radical transformation in that for the first time in my life I am connected to several very influential people—all of whom are mega millionaires. My proximity to these wealthy individuals has increased my business and financial acumen in ways I could not have imagined. My connection to this group has given me direct access to information and resources that I did not have before.
Proximity to greatness has many advantages; however, it does not guarantee success.
Even so, despite my connection and proximity to these industry experts and influencers, their status, their wealth and their greatness will not translate into me becoming great unless I take full advantage of experiencing greatness for myself.
Notwithstanding that proximity to greatness has many advantages, it does not guarantee success. Getting in the pool with Michael Phelps will no more make you into an Olympic swimmer as gluing feathers to your body will turn you into an eagle and give you the ability to fly.
Finding your niche and working your ass off is perhaps the most important ingredient as it relates to becoming great. Success is personal. Becoming great is personal. And if becoming great was something that was easily cultivated, attained and mastered, then everybody would be great.
So, don’t confuse proximity to greatness with greatness. In order to be great—to be phenomenal, you must be obsessed and driven about making the impossible possible. Ultimately, you succeed because of YOU!
