I write a lot about winning and success because I enjoy being successful and I love winning.
And I imagine that most of you who are reading this post think about success at least once a day and are framing some aspect of your reality around achieving high levels of success. Most of us have big goals we would like to attain, and we desire to live a meaningful life.
But here is something many people have either not considered or do not fully understand.
Success almost never shows up when you think it should. And success certainly does not show up right away. It takes TIME to win! It does not matter how good or great you think you are at your craft or niche. It does not matter how awesome you think your ideas or plans are, the fact is, enduring success takes time to accomplish.
So if you are not in the game for the long-term—if you are hoping to become an overnight success, overnight—then you are in for a serious rude awakening.
The reason the valley leading to the mountaintop of success is littered with abandoned dreams, forsaken ambitions and deserted goals is because those individuals believed that the mountain that stood in their way of success was something they could conquer.
What these individuals did not consider was that this mountain they attempted to climb does not have a summit. This mountain of success only goes up, and up, and up. This mountain is designed to deter anyone who thinks s/he could cheat the process. This mountain is designed to test your spirit, will and resolve. And here is something else you should consider. No two persons will ever walk the same trail on this mountain. Moreover, no one has ever conquered this mountain on his or her first or second year attempt.
It takes TIME to win!
But there is a secret to conquering this mountain. The secret lies in not focusing on conquering the mountain. The secret to successfully scaling this mountain is to love the climb, to enjoy the process, to develop discipline, to commit to the climb without wavering, to create meaning from every obstacle and setback faced during the climb, and to be a guide to adventure-seeking souls desirous of attempting to climb this mountain.
If you love the game, you will win. If you create your passion, nurture that passion, become the go-to person (influencer or expert) relating to that passion, and find meaningful ways, as it relates to that passion, to deploy value and enrich others’ lives, then success awaits you at the top. The questions now become, how badly do you want to experience the success you say you desire to experience? And will your actions match your rhetoric?
So keep climbing until you reach your goal. And keep climbing with all your heart and soul.
Your message is so relevant! I often find myself having ‘tunnel vision’ without really being present in or not enjoying the climb… Thank you for this reminder 🙂

Yes. This. Also, I think often when we begin to finally achieve some success, we find it has not arrived in the way we expected. It seems to me that the most successful people I’ve encountered have in common that they were able to recognize unexpected forms of success and embrace them, maybe changing their path a little bit, but still propelling them toward their goals.

So nicely said. Climbing that mountain and staying on task is hard work. Not to say that it isn’t fun in the process. I stumble over rocks and fallen limbs all the time, but never give up. Thanks for the inspiration.

Staying on task is indeed hard work, Laura! But what other options do winners have? Right?
