The Opportunity Is Still There

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. -Helen Keller

Every person, at one time or another, has had to deal with the feelings of regret for not maximizing opportunities in the lifetime of those opportunities. We all wish we would have handled a situation differently or done something better.

Personally, I regret not being as fiscally responsible as I should have been. There are those who wish they’d spent more time with their kids while they were young. Some folks can’t bear the sight of their spouse or partner—intimacy and love no longer define the relationship. There are others who wish they would have chosen a different career path. And the list goes on.

Yes, there have been painful moments in your life. So what you’ve failed to act when that opportunity presented itself. It’s not the end of the world. You are not the only person feeling disappointed or frustrated about something. Making mistakes is an unavoidable facet of the human experience.

Obsessing about the past—focusing on mistakes—burdening yourself with guilt and regret is the one sure way to invite stress and depression into your life. It is easy to get stuck in a rut when all you do is ruminate and obsess over things that keep you from living as the phenomenal person you are.

The reality is, no one gets it right the first time. It takes time to experience a paradigm shift—to develop a growth mindset. It takes time to master your craft. It takes time for success to mature into something awe-inspiring.

Nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go and starting over. -Guy Finley

If there’s one takeaway you ought to consider from this post is: Every day gives us another opportunity to assess our actions, right our wrongs, and set new goals.

Developing a success mindset involves learning from the past—from your mistakes—and constructing intelligent ways to achieve your short and long-term goals and build the future of your dreams.

Because failures, setbacks, obstacles, and mistakes are part of life, why not get a reward for them. Rather than building monuments to guilt and regret, why not use those emotions to become a better version of you and plot a new course to the life beyond your imaginings.

It is never too late to be the person you were destined to be. The opportunity to pursue a new beginning is a choice each person has to make. Life is not always easy to live, but you can choose to begin life anew today and change your stars.

Focusing on the opportunities that are still there is the one variable you can control. You can leave worry, regret, and guilt behind, and consciously form positive thoughts and habits. You can choose to believe that failure is not the end and new beginnings are possible. You can take that first step toward transforming your reality and making the rest of your life the best of your life.
